Dog Wash Shampoo for Dry Skin and Dandruff
We don’t wash dogs with human shampoo – there are shampoos designed to meet the skin and hair needs of our Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, and Standard Poodles.
We give Tropiclean Oxymed Medicated Oatmeal Shampoo and Treatment two paws up! Human shampoo is readily available, but when you wash your dog think about Fido’s specific skin and coat needs. Since we live in a very dry climate, our puppies tend to have dry skin, sometimes even dandruff. A puppy’s sebaceous glands, oil glands in the skin, are not fully developed until 12-16 weeks of age (www.peteducation.com). Sometimes we’ll see dry skin or dandruff start to appear on our puppies by 5-6 weeks of age and then leave by 10-12 weeks of age as their oil gland production fully develops.
In the meantime, puppy needs a bath! In addition to brushing puppy’s coat on a daily basis to help distribute and massage natural oils in the skin, we researched products that would not cause more dry skin or irritate it further. We found OxyMed Tropiclean Medicated Oatmeal Shampoo and Treatment helped with removing and clearing the dandruff, and left puppies smelling clean and without irritated skin.
Shampoo is gentle enough for 3 week old poodle puppy!
We’ve used this shampoo on Labradoodle, AKC Standard Poodle, and Goldendoodle puppies and had similar results on the different coats associated with each breed. We even use on our adult dogs as a preventative, instead of using a human shampoo that may unintentionally cause dry skin. We’ve seen the best results if you use the product as directed on the bottle. And yes, use a timer to leave the shampoo on for 5 minutes, and then follow up with the rinse treatment for dry skin and dandruff on the coat for another 5 minutes. We towel dry, then blow dry, and brush, brush, brush.
